Academics

WHS is proud in offer the most comprehensive subject choice in Namibia. This our learners with the necessary knowledge and skills to enter the job market, confident to take on the best and come out on top.

Over and above the normal subjects, our curriculum also includes the following extra components: Entrepreneurial skills, Information Technology for learners in grade 8 -10, 24 hour access to Internet, AutuCAD for learners taking Technical Drawing, Turbo Cash for learners taking Accounting, Word Processing for learners taking Typing and a special Mathematics programme helping learners to practice the basic skills.

Over the past years WHS has achieved of the best results in the Grade 10 JSC examination and the Grade 12 Cambridge HIGCSE examination. Learners concluding the Cambridge HIGCSE examination with success, are well prepared for the needs and challenges of Tertiary Education in Namibia, South Africa and abroad.

Every grade 8 -10 student will have 9 subjects which will include, 5 compulsory subjects, 2 languages in combination and 2 non-compulsory subjects.

The 5 compulsory subjects are:

  • Mathematics
  • Physical Science
  • Life Science
  • History
  • Geography

The 2 languages in combination are:
  • English 1st Language and Afrikaans 2nd Language
  • Afrikaans 1st Language and English 2nd Language
  • Afrikaans 1st Language and English 1st Language
  • All subject combinations depend on whether it will fit into the rooster.

Non-compulsory subjects in combination are:
  • Accounting and Computer Practice
  • Accounting and Entrepreneurship

Every grade 11 student's subject choice should include a minimum of 6 subjects.

Languages
In line with the ministerial policy each pupil must take at least two languages, one of which must be a First Language.

  • Afrikaans Second Language is only offered at Ordinary level;
  • Othiherero First Language is only offered at Ordinary level;
  • Oshidonga First Language is offered at Higher and Ordinary level; and lastly
  • If you have Afrikaans 2nd Language in Grade 10, you cannot take Afrikaans 1st Language in Grade 11; and lastly
  • If you have English 2nd Language in Grade 10, you cannot take English 1st Language in Grade 11.

Accounting, Business Studies, Computer and Design & Technology must be accompanied by a pass in Mathematics (with at least a 3 on Higher Level or a C on Ordinary Level) to come into consideration for exemption.
Mathematics: To take Mathematics on Higher Level, you had to take Additional Mathematics in Grade 10 and passes with an A - C grading.
Physical Science and Computer Studies should not be considered on High Level without at least Mathematics on Extended Level.
Development Studies and Economics may not be taken together.

Admission into the following subjects is dependent on a student achieving the necessary grades in the Grade 10 external examination as listed below:

Uneconomical Groupings While the school strives to accommodate the choices of every pupil, it is important to note that not every child will necessarily have his/her subject choice met, despite meeting the entry requirements for the chosen subject. Staff limitations prevent learners being accommodated in small, uneconomical groups. If there are less than 15 learners interested in taking a specific subject, that subject choice will not be offered at WHS.

Every grade 11 student's subject choice should include a minimum of 6 subjects.
